Veterinary Day 2026
Every year, World Veterinary Day highlights the vital role veterinarians play in society. In 2026, the global theme - “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health” - emphasizes how essential veterinary professionals are in ensuring both animal well-being and human health.
The World Veterinary Association (WVA) Council selected this theme to underline the systemic role of veterinary services in safeguarding food safety, food security, public health, and animal health worldwide. From farm to fork, veterinarians are at the frontline of ensuring that food of animal origin is safe, nutritious, and responsibly produced.
Veterinarians are deeply involved in every stage of food production. They monitor animal health, prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases, and ensure ethical and safe farming practices. Their work protects consumers and supports sustainable food systems.
Many infectious diseases affecting humans originate from animals. Veterinarians play a key role in identifying, controlling, and preventing these zoonotic diseases. Their expertise strengthens global health security and helps reduce risks to communities.
The 2026 theme recognizes that global food systems are increasingly interconnected and exposed to emerging threats such as disease outbreaks, climate change, antimicrobial resistance, and economic instability. In this context, veterinarians are not only animal health professionals, but also essential contributors to health security, sustainability, and economic resilience.
World Veterinary Day 2026 aims to elevate public understanding and policy recognition of veterinary services as a cornerstone of safe and sustainable food systems. To support this, a global toolkit has been developed to help veterinary organizations and professionals promote the theme through activities, communication, and public engagement.
Veterinarians are not only caregivers for animals - they are guardians of our food systems, defenders of public health, and key contributors to a safer, healthier world.
