Pharmacological Action:
Iodine has antiseptic and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (including Pasteurella, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, streptococci, spirochetes, corynebacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, etc.), fungi, and viruses.
The active ingredient, povidone-iodine, is a polymer complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone) with iodine. Its antiseptic effect is due to the gradual release of free iodine from the complex. The released iodine works antiseptically without causing irritation or burning. A thin colored layer remains at the application site until the iodine is completely released.
